Has the front door of your Munsey Park home started to stick, or does a window with small panes refuse to stay up? Call us before you think about new ones. Changing your front door or windows here takes a village permit. Repairing the one you have is often the simpler path.

If your house is one of the village’s Colonials

Munsey Park was planned from the start as a village of Colonial-style homes. About half were built before 1940, and nearly all before 1960. Your house may still have the wood windows it was built with. With that much age, you might notice:

  • A window drops shut because the cord inside the frame has snapped.
  • A sash (the part that slides up and down) is stuck under old paint.
  • A small pane is loose because the putty holding it has crumbled.
  • Cold air slips in around a sash that no longer fits snugly.
Each of these is a repair, not a reason to replace the window. Your home keeps its original windows, and they look better when we are done.

Before you replace a window or front door

The village asks for a permit to change your front door or windows. If the new one is different from the original, it must go before the village’s Building Advisory Committee. The committee’s guidelines say new windows must match your home’s style and be in proportion to the windows you have. They must also have muntins, the thin bars that divide the glass into small panes.

Repairing the window you have may spare you much of that. Call Village Hall before you plan any replacement, and ask what your house needs. The committee makes its own decisions, and we cannot promise how it will rule.

If your front door is the one the house came with

On a Colonial, the front door is the first thing people see. A wood door that sticks, sags or will not latch can often be brought back. Loose hinges, a worn lock or a swollen edge are often the cause. We can tighten, adjust or replace the hardware and keep the door you have.

If tall trees shade your windows

Munsey Park has been a Tree City USA since 1983, and its roads are lined with trees. Shade is lovely, but a sill that rarely sees sun may stay damp longer after rain. Leaves can also gather on sills and in the bottom corners of storm doors.

Each spring, press on the wood under your shaded windows. If it feels soft, ask us to repair it now, before more wood is lost.

FAQ

Questions from Munsey Park homeowners

Do I need a permit just to fix my old windows?

Call Village Hall and ask; that is their call, not ours. The village does ask for a permit to change your front door or windows. A repair keeps the window you have, so there may be less to file.

My windows have small panes. Can you fix a loose one?

Yes. When the putty around a small pane dries out, the glass can rattle or let in air. We can reset the glass with fresh putty and paint the wood to protect it.

Will repaired windows still look right on my Colonial?

Yes. A repair keeps your original windows, with their divided panes and their proportions. They keep the character the house was built with, and they look better when we are done.

My storm door slams shut. Can that be fixed?

Usually. The closer (the piston at the top that slows the door) may need adjusting or replacing. You keep your storm door.

Do you work in Manhasset and the Plandomes too?

Yes. We serve the towns around Munsey Park, including Manhasset, Plandome and Plandome Manor.
