A window does not need to be officially historic to be worth saving. Many homes still have original windows that are 50, 75, or even more than 100 years old. Some are located in landmark properties, while others are simply well-built older windows that have served the home for generations.

Age alone does not mean these windows need to be replaced.

Older windows were often constructed from individual serviceable components. Sash, balances, cords, weights, pulleys, locks, hardware, glazing, and even damaged wood sections can often
be repaired or restored independently.

Repairing Older Window Systems & Mechanisms

Traditional and older windows can use operating systems that have not been manufactured for decades. A double-hung window may rely on sash cords, pulleys, and counterweights hidden inside the frame, while other older windows may use early balance systems or specialized hardware that is difficult to find today.

Common problems include windows that won’t stay open, sash that suddenly fall down, broken sash cords, disconnected weights, worn pulleys, failed balances, damaged locks, and windows that have become difficult to open or close.

When an original part is no longer available, we evaluate whether the existing component can be repaired or whether a compatible replacement or practical alternative can restore proper

Old Window Glass, Reglazing & Performance Upgrades

Older windows may have deteriorated glazing, loose or broken glass, drafts, worn weatherstripping, or gaps that affect comfort and performance.

Depending on the condition of the window, we can address glazing problems, replace damaged glass, improve weatherstripping, correct sash alignment, and repair other conditions that prevent the window from closing and sealing properly.

When original historic glass remains serviceable, preservation may also be possible. Older glass can have subtle waves and visual characteristics that are difficult to reproduce with modern materials.

Why Repair an Old Window Instead of Replacing It?

Many older windows were built from quality materials and designed so individual components could be serviced. When the basic window structure remains sound, repairing a failed component can make more sense than removing the entire system.

Repair may preserve original wood, architectural details, window proportions, historic glass, and components that would disappear with complete replacement. It can also avoid unnecessary
construction when the actual problem is limited to a sash cord, balance, hardware component, glazing, alignment issue, or localized wood deterioration.

Is my window too old to repair?

Not necessarily. We work with windows that are several decades old as well as window systems that have been in service for 100 years or more. The condition and construction of the window matter more than its age.

Does my house need to be historic or landmarked?

No. We repair old and original windows in regular homes as well as windows in historic and landmark properties. A window does not need an official historic designation to be worth repairing.

Can you repair old double-hung windows that won’t stay open?

Yes. The problem may involve sash cords, weights, pulleys, balances, or another part of the operating system. These components can often be repaired or replaced without replacing the complete window.

Can rotten wood be repaired without replacing the entire window?

Often, yes. When deterioration is localized and surrounding material remains structurally sound, damaged portions of a sash, frame, or sill may be repaired or rebuilt while preserving the rest of the window.
