Has the arched window high over your front door turned cloudy? Or does the latch on an old board door no longer drop into its catch? Armonk has both kinds of house. Roughly half its homes date from 1990 or after, and some are far older. WindowFixGuru™ works on both, and our work is repair-first. What is original to your house stays, and the finished work leaves it better looking.

In dry winter air the boards of an old Armonk door can shrink apart, and its thumb latch may stop catching. An old door like that can often be mended where it hangs.

The arched window over a tall front entry
In a house from the 1990s or 2000s, the front hall may rise two floors, with a fixed arched window above the door. Its glass is usually a sealed double pane. After that seal wears out, the glass can dull a little more with each season. The curved wood trim around it can also open at its joints as the years pass.
The window itself rarely has to come out for either fault. A new sealed pane can often be made to the same curve, and curved trim can be mended and repainted. Stand in the hall on a bright morning and look up. Haze, or a dark line along the trim, is reason enough to call 516-841-5048.
Get an EstimateBoard doors and thumb latches in a house past a hundred
The Town of North Castle counts over 100 homes across the Town that are at least 100 years old. If yours is one, it may have doors made of wide boards, held shut by a thumb latch: a small lever that lifts a bar. Boards shrink in dry winter air, and thin gaps can open between them. The bar can also wear until it no longer drops into its catch.
Doors like these are part of the house. A worn latch can often be reset or its catch moved, and loose boards tightened. Mended, it is still the door the house was built with, only better looking. Have us see it before anyone fits a modern knob through old wood.
Six Greek Revival houses on Bedford Road
On the north side of Bedford Road, by Town Hall, sits the Bedford Road Historic District. It has been on the National Register since 1985, and it takes in six Greek Revival houses. It is part of the Town’s own Landmarks Preservation District Number 1, created in 1979.
The Town’s Landmarks Preservation Committee looks after landmarked homes. On one of those, outside alterations need its Certificate of Appropriateness. The Town says inside alterations need no such approval from the committee. You file before any work that needs the certificate begins, and the Town posts what the application must contain. Is mending a window such work? The certificate is the committee’s to give, so the answer is too. That application goes to the committee itself, from you as the owner.

Armonk is one of three hamlets in the Town of North Castle, and the Town’s Building Department is the one that issues permits here. Its FAQ lists the work that requires a building permit, and window replacement is on that list. The department’s permit guide speaks more broadly. Generally, it says, you need a permit whenever you alter or repair a building, among other things.
Neither says where the repair of one existing window falls. The guide urges you to call or make an appointment before applying, so staff can answer questions. The office is in the annex building at the rear of 17 Bedford Road. The Town’s Architectural Review Board reviews major new buildings and renovation projects before a permit is issued. Take the guide up on that offer.

We no longer have a dog. Can the pet door cut into our back door be closed up?
Often, yes, if the flap sits in a flat panel. The opening can be filled with a new panel or a fitted piece, then sealed and painted. On a steel or fiberglass door a patch shows more, so we would look first. The door itself usually stays.
A hinge has torn out of one of our hollow bedroom doors. Is the door finished?
Not always. Inside, such a door is mostly air, with a wood frame around the rim, and a hinge screw can pull out of that frame. The torn spot can often be rebuilt with a glued wood insert that gives the screws something to hold. If the edge has split along its length, a new door hung in the old frame may be the better fix.
A past owner put tinted film on the glass, and it is bubbling now. Can it come off without harming the window?
Usually it can. Old film can be softened and peeled, and the glue left behind cleaned off the glass. On double-pane glass we check first that the haze is the film, and not a failed seal inside. A failed seal is a different repair.
Our front door deadbolt needs a key on the inside as well. Can it be changed to one that turns by hand?
Often it can. On many deadbolts the inside half can be swapped for a small turn piece, while the outside still takes your key. An older or less common lock may need a different deadbolt fitted in its place.
