Thank you!

When a truck goes by, do you hear a window buzz in your Riverside house? Or does a sash wobble in its frame as you lift it? The window itself may be fine. Riverside is a section of the Town of Greenwich, and about half the homes in this part of Greenwich went up between 1940 and 1980. At that age, the cause is often a worn part beside the sash. With that part replaced, the original window can often stay, style and all, and it looks better when we are done.

Sashes that ride in spring-loaded side tracks

Many wood windows made in the 1960s and 1970s are held by two side tracks in the frame. The tracks are strips of vinyl or thin metal, with springs behind them. Push the sash sideways and it lifts out for cleaning.

Those tracks age. The vinyl can turn brittle and crack, and the springs can lose their push. Then the sash wobbles, lets air past its sides or creeps out of place.

The wood sash is often still good. New tracks can usually be fitted around it, so the window stays and the wobble goes. If yours lift out this way and feel loose, call 516-841-5048.

When traffic or a train makes a window buzz

The Connecticut Turnpike, the Post Road and a rail line all pass through Riverside. If you live near one of them, you may hear it most through a loose window.

A sash with room to move can buzz as a heavy truck passes. So can a pane whose seal has dried out. Gaps that let in air let in sound as well.

We cannot promise a quiet room. What we can do is take the play out of the sash, reseal loose glass and close the gaps around it. Call 516-841-5048 about the windows nearest the road or the tracks.

Where a door frame meets the sill

The Mianus River runs along one edge of Riverside, and Greenwich Cove lies along another. On Willowmere Avenue the cove is the nearer water, and on Sheephill Road it is the river.

Near that water the air stays damp, and it may carry salt. The part of an outside door that often suffers first is not the door. It is the bottom few inches of the frame on each side, where the wood meets the sill and soaks up water.

Push a thumbnail into the frame just above the sill. If it sinks in, that soft section may be sawn away and fresh wood spliced in, with the frame left in place. Have that done while the soft part is still short.

If you have a quote for new windows

Has someone quoted you new windows for the whole house? A Riverside address gets its permits from the Town of Greenwich. Its permit page names replacement windows for one- and two-family houses as a building permit application, one that can be sent in by email. So a whole-house swap likely comes with paperwork.

If you plan to mend the windows you have instead, write to the Building Inspection Division at bldginsp@greenwichct.org, describe the repair and ask. Then keep the reply with your house papers.

FAQ

Questions from Riverside homeowners

Is Riverside a historic district?

Not as a whole. Neither of the local historic districts on the Town’s list is in Riverside. The Town also lists single Local Historic Properties, and that list shows one house on Riverside Avenue, with the year 2024 beside it. The Town’s Historic District Commission reviews proposed changes to a listed property.

We want a lock that opens with a code on our original front door. Will the old door take one?

It may. That depends on how thick the door is and how the old lock was cut in. Some code locks fit the existing holes, and others need new ones. We would look at the door before saying what fits, so the wood is not cut twice.

We keep an air conditioner in the same window every summer. Has it harmed the sash?

It can. The weight may dent the sill, and water dripping off the unit can soften the wood under it. The raised sash may also sit unlocked for months. When the unit comes out in the fall, look at the sill and try the lock.

After new carpet went in, two bedroom doors drag across it. Can they be trimmed?

In most cases, yes. A wood door can be taken off its hinges and a little cut from the bottom. A hollow door has only a narrow strip of solid wood there, so we measure before cutting.

Do you work in Old Greenwich, Greenwich and Darien too?

Yes. Near Riverside we serve Old Greenwich, Greenwich and Darien.
