Older Windows

Old Windows Can Often Be Repaired

A window does not need to be officially historic to be worth saving. Many homes still have original windows that are 50, 75, or even more than 100 years old. Some are located in landmark properties, while others are simply well-built older windows that have served the home for generations.

Age alone does not mean these windows need to be replaced.

Older windows were often constructed from individual serviceable components. Sash, balances, cords, weights, pulleys, locks, hardware, glazing, and even damaged wood sections can often be repaired or restored independently.

Our experience

WindowFixGuru™ has experience working with older window systems and understands how to diagnose problems that are very different from those found in modern replacement windows. Whenever the existing window remains serviceable, our goal is to repair what has failed and preserve what is still worth keeping.

Mechanisms

Repairing Older Window Systems & Mechanisms

Traditional and older windows can use operating systems that have not been manufactured for decades. A double-hung window may rely on sash cords, pulleys, and counterweights hidden inside the frame, while other older windows may use early balance systems or specialized hardware that is difficult to find today.

Common problems include windows that won’t stay open, sash that suddenly fall down, broken sash cords, disconnected weights, worn pulleys, failed balances, damaged locks, and windows that have become difficult to open or close.

When an original part is no longer available, we evaluate whether the existing component can be repaired or whether a compatible replacement or practical alternative can restore proper operation.

A discontinued part does not automatically mean you need a new window.

Wood Repair

Wood Sash, Frame & Rotten Wood Repair

Wood deterioration is common in older windows, especially around lower sash rails, window sills, corners, joints, and areas repeatedly exposed to moisture.

Localized wood rot does not always require replacement of the complete window.

Depending on the extent of the damage, WindowFixGuru™ can repair or rebuild deteriorated sections while preserving surrounding wood that remains structurally sound. This may include old wood window repair, wood sash restoration, rotten window sash repair, rotten window frame repair, window sill repair, and restoration of other damaged wood components.

For original and older windows, preserving the existing sash and frame can also help maintain the dimensions, profiles, divided-light patterns, and architectural details that give the window its character.

Glass & Glazing

Old Window Glass, Reglazing & Performance Upgrades

Older windows may have deteriorated glazing, loose or broken glass, drafts, worn weatherstripping, or gaps that affect comfort and performance.

Depending on the condition of the window, we can address glazing problems, replace damaged glass, improve weatherstripping, correct sash alignment, and repair other conditions that prevent the window from closing and sealing properly.

When original historic glass remains serviceable, preservation may also be possible. Older glass can have subtle waves and visual characteristics that are difficult to reproduce with modern materials.

Some older window systems may also be candidates for energy-efficiency improvements such as Low-E glass, insulated glass, improved weatherstripping, or interior storm window options. These upgrades are evaluated individually to make sure they are appropriate for the construction and condition of the existing window.

Historic Windows

Historic & Landmark Window Restoration

Some old windows have additional architectural or historic significance. They may be original to a historic property, located within a landmark or historic district, or simply contain craftsmanship and architectural details worth preserving.

WindowFixGuru™ applies the same repair-first experience to these windows with additional attention to preserving original materials and appearance whenever practical.

This may include historic wood window restoration, historic sash restoration, original hardware repair, sash cord and weight systems, traditional glazing, historic glass preservation, rotten wood restoration, and repair of historic steel or metal windows.

Whenever possible, we work to retain original sash, frames, profiles, divided-light patterns, glass, hardware, and other character-defining components while restoring proper window operation.

Not every old window is historic—but historic windows are old windows too, and we know how to work with both.

Repair First

Why Repair an Old Window Instead of Replacing It?

Many older windows were built from quality materials and designed so individual components could be serviced. When the basic window structure remains sound, repairing a failed component can make more sense than removing the entire system.

Repair may preserve original wood, architectural details, window proportions, historic glass, and components that would disappear with complete replacement. It can also avoid unnecessary construction when the actual problem is limited to a sash cord, balance, hardware component, glazing, alignment issue, or localized wood deterioration.

Of course, not every old window should be saved. When deterioration is extensive or important structural components are beyond practical repair, replacement may be the better option.

WindowFixGuru™ evaluates the actual condition of the window first.

Repair what can be repaired. Preserve what is worth preserving. Replace only when necessary.

Questions & Answers

FAQ

Is my window too old to repair?

Not necessarily. We work with windows that are several decades old as well as window systems that have been in service for 100 years or more. The condition and construction of the window matter more than its age.

Does my house need to be historic or landmarked?

No. We repair old and original windows in regular homes as well as windows in historic and landmark properties. A window does not need an official historic designation to be worth repairing.

Can you repair old double-hung windows that won’t stay open?

Yes. The problem may involve sash cords, weights, pulleys, balances, or another part of the operating system. These components can often be repaired or replaced without replacing the complete window.

Can rotten wood be repaired without replacing the entire window?

Often, yes. When deterioration is localized and surrounding material remains structurally sound, damaged portions of a sash, frame, or sill may be repaired or rebuilt while preserving the rest of the window.

What if parts for my old windows are discontinued?

We evaluate whether the original component can be repaired or whether a compatible replacement or practical alternative is available. Discontinued hardware does not automatically mean the complete window needs replacement.

Can old windows be made more energy efficient?

In many cases, yes. Depending on the window, improvements may include weatherstripping, adjustment, glazing repair, interior storm windows, or modern glass upgrades such as Low-E or insulated glass.
